Adoption is a form of parenthood that’s taken by many individuals for a wide array of reasons. For instance, some parents will choose to adopt as they’re not able to conceive naturally. Others simply prefer the idea of giving a child that’s already been brought into the world a better shot at life. The notion of adoption is becoming increasingly popular as individuals are keen to help children who would otherwise be in difficult spots. If individuals aren’t in a position to commit to adoption, they might consider orphan sponsorship so that they can support children who have lost one or both parents financially.
In fact, adoption is a route of parenthood that’s taken by many celebrities, as detailed below.
Hugh Jackman
First up is Hugh Jackman, who adopted his son, Oscar, and daughter, Ava, with his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, after the couple struggled with fertility. When they married, Furness was 40, and she struggled with IVF and miscarriages. This resulted in the couple’s decision to adopt two mixed-race babies. Jackman claimed that he wanted to adopt from a culture in which the need was greatest and, at the time, this was mixed-race children. Jackman adopted the children in 2009, and since then, the family has gone from strength to strength, leading a happy life.
Sandra Bullock
After divorcing Jesse James, Sandra Bullock adopted her son, Louis. Five years later, she adopted her daughter, Laila. Both children were adopted from the Louisiana foster care system; however, she initially kept the second adoption a secret. This was to make a point that she could deliver a normal home environment for her children, even though her family is “blended and diverse, nutty, and loving and understanding”, in her own words. In fact, she likened the secrecy to living in the Witness Protection Program, which shows the lengths that we feel we must go to, to avoid cruel and unnecessary judgment from others.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
The pair have since divorced, but when they were married, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman adopted children, Connor and Isabella, when they were married. The pair were adopted as toddlers, but they have since grown into adults, with Connor being 28 and Isabella being 30. To this day, they are both still practicing scientologists, as they made the decision to live with their father following the split in 2001. There’s speculation that they no longer associate with Kidman due to the fact that she’s not linked to the Church of Scientology.
Rosario Dawson
Rosario Dawson adopted her daughter, Isabella, when she was 11. She claims that ever since she was five years old, she knew she wanted to adopt an older child. It’s no secret that those looking to adopt are often on the lookout for babies and toddlers, yet there are so many children in care that also need parents. It’s for this reason that Dawson wanted to take this route. There’s no denying that adopting an older child would certainly come with its challenges, but this only means that the reward would feel so much greater.
Sia
In 2019, Sia adopted two 18-year-old boys who were aging out of the care system. She speaks on how understaffed and underfunded the system is, meaning there are often no programs in place to integrate those approaching 18 into society. They simply reach an age that’s considered “adult”, and they’re left to their own devices. Therefore, Sia adopted them on a mission to help aging children make a smooth transition from the care system to the wider world. With the right resources, these newfound adults can thrive.
